2a. What are the benefits of Jobelyn in Pregnancy?

-Pregnancy is characterized by dynamic changes in the body resulting in an increase in oxygen consumption by several organs in the body most especially the placenta, in order to meet the needs of the fetus.

-This process leads to the production of free radicals which would otherwise be cleared by antioxidants which are present in the body naturally. However, with a shift in the equilibrium of this process, excess free radicals are generated causing harm to the mother and the fetus.

  • Broadly speaking Jobelyn acts as a super antioxidant which mops up these free radicals from the system
  • Provides energy because of its dietary properties(contains carbohydrates, proteins and other nutrients)
  • Prevents anemia by maintaining the integrity of the red blood cells.
  • Improves the general immunity of the mother thereby decreasing the susceptibility to disease conditions like malaria, gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia.
  • Its antioxidant property may also play a role in preventing miscarriages and birth defects related to alcohol( Fetal alcohol syndrome)

2b. Are there any benefits to using Jobelyn before pregnancy?

Jobelyn plays a very important role in female infertility because of its antioxidant properties. This is a broad area for discussion at another time.

 3. Do you have any personal experience you can share with our listeners on the effects of Jobelyn in pregnancy?

Nutrition- I found it particularly useful in the first trimester of my pregnancy as a dietary supplement. Due to the effects of morning sickness and poor apetite, I often had fainting spells and was generally very tired. With Jobelyn, I quickly regained my energy levels.

Prevention of Iron-deficiency anemia- I was able to avoid the use of iron tablets which made me constipated, yet was able to prevent the onset of iron-deficiency anemia.

Prevention of common ailments- with a boost in my immunity, I was less susceptible to common ailments in pregnancy such as malaria, urinary tract infection. I was particularly healthy and rarely suffered from common cold, heartburn, vaginal thrush etc

4. Does Jobelyn offer any advantages over commonly prescribed ante-natal medication ?

It is interesting to note that in the U.K and other developed countries, it is no longer routine to place pregnant women on vitamin supplements as the emphasis is on good nutrition. This is where Jobelyn provides a clear advantage as it functions not only as a dietary supplement but also as an antioxidant to improve the immunity and stave off the myriad of problems associated with pregnancy in a developing nation like ours. In addition it is also cheaper that the regular multivitamins sold over the counter.

However, It is strongly recommended that certain medication be used such as folic acid before and during pregnancy because of its proven benefit in the prevention of neural tube defects and anti-malarials because of the high morbidity and mortality associated with malaria in pregnancy.

5. Are there any side-effects that a pregnant woman should be aware of (or risks to the unborn fetus)?

Jobelyn is a natural antioxidant made from the plant sorghum bicolor long recognized for its nutritional benefits in several parts of the world.

Antioxidants such as vitamin C and E have been used for hundreds of years in pregnant women without any deleterious effects in the right doses.

Toxicity studies carried out both locally and internationally also attest to the safety of Jobelyn without any known side effects

6. What is the recommended dosage?

3 capsules of Jobelyn a day taken with lots of water is recommended at the first trimester of pregnancy to be gradually increased to a maximum of 6-8 capsules per day towards the end of the third trimester as the need arises.
